Huge Relief for School Children of India

For decades a common sight in towns and cities across India has been school children, even five and six year olds, carrying enormously huge school bags likes beasts of burden. It saddens any compassionate adult to see this sight. Many have voiced concern over the matter. Not only is this a daily burden, medical practitioners have stated this can lead to permanent physical damage and deformities to a child, but yet the practice went on and on. Perhaps no practical thumb rule was suggested by anyone to control the practice. On the part of schools, perhaps the greed of commissions that accrue from sales of books have been paramount.

Moved by the plight of these children, some months ago this author tweeted to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Honorable Minister of Human Resources Shri Prakash Javedkar ji suggesting the sort of rule that might be imposed on schools,




To this author’s delight, this author read in the morning newspapers today,

 “Center fixes weight of school bags based on class” 

This rule with necessary adjustments has now been instituted. The necessary changes required in curriculum to implement it have also been announced. It shall bring relief to millions of children across the country. This author did not forget to convey his thanks to Modi ji and Prakash Javedkar ji for it immediately in a tweet,



Ever since the government of Narendra Modi came to power, he has not only opened channels of communications to public at large but also encouraged them to make suggestions. The earlier government had perhaps become complacent from years of power and had no such mechanism. This author has made full use of this invitation and frequently sent suggestions to Modi ji on various matters of public and national interest. Some have been heard.  The present one is an example of that.

W ith progress of science and knowledge one would have expected that standard of basic arithmetic of school children too would have improved. However, surprisingly, this is one area where instead of improvement deterioration appears to have taken place in recent decades. Several surveys carried out in different parts of the world indicate that while children are becoming better at electronic things like computers, their most basic arithmetic skills are deteriorating. A Dress for Nalanda University Convocation

When the British arrived in India some two centuries ago the concept of a university was reintroduced in India. With that came many western customs including western gowns and formal dresses worn at convocations for award of degrees. While this is appropriate for universities developed on the western concept, it is most inappropriate if it is done at the recently revived Nalanda University. The appropriate dress is the same one as must have been worn at the original Nalalnda University on formal occasions and that is the formal Buddhist Monk dress.   W hile modern children have become wizards at electronic devices with even three year olds using a smart phone like a professional, they are not as good at basic skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic. Some of the modern methods of teaching these subjects at school is not helping much either. These are essential skills that a human needs not just through all of their education but also to navigate successfully through life.
